Managing Director
Jason Smith

Jason joined Matthew Thomas Advisors after a successful career as both a private investor and operator, with deep experience leading corporate M&A, strategic acquisitions, and business optimization in the lower middle market. He has a strong track record of advising and executing transactions across multiple industries, particularly in service-based and asset-intensive businesses.
Prior to MTA, Jason served as President, Corporate Development & Finance of a multi- unit car wash platform, where he led the acquisition and integration of nine locations and successfully executed six divestitures. In this corporate M&A role, he was directly responsible for sourcing deals, negotiating purchase agreements, managing diligence, and building financial models—providing hands-on experience in creating and capturing value through buy-and-build strategies. Jason also founded M.M. Smith & Partners, a private real estate investment firm focused on value-add commercial and multifamily assets. There, he led all acquisition, redevelopment, and exit strategies across a portfolio that included multifamily, office, and mixed-use assets. His experience spans sourcing and closing off-market deals, executing strategic repositioning, and optimizing operating performance to enhance long-term value. He brings a hands-on, operator’s mindset to every transaction, combining financial discipline with practical execution.
Earlier in his career, Jason worked as an equity research analyst at a hedge fund, where he led public company investments, including activist campaigns that resulted in board-level changes and strong investment outcomes. This foundational experience refined his skills in valuation, capital allocation, and investment strategy—capabilities he brings to every client engagement.
Jason has raised over $10 million in equity capital and structured more than $50 million in senior and junior debt financing, supporting both operating businesses and real estate transactions. He holds an MBA in Finance & Analytics from NYU Stern School of Business and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. His blend of principal investing, operational leadership, and transaction execution allows him to guide business owners through complex M&A processes with confidence and clarity.
Outside of work, Jason is deeply devoted to his family and loves spending time with his wife and two young sons—whether it’s backyard water gun battles, weekend adventures, or family dinners. He’s passionate about travel, especially to St. Barths, where he enjoys the food, culture, and slower pace of life. He’s also an avid tennis player and skier, and looks forward to annual winter trips to Aspen with his family.
